Did you ever wonder who it is that decides that schoolchildren should not be allowed to sing Christmas carols at school? Who determines that manger scenes can't be erected in public settings? For that matter, who began the ridiculous "Happy Holidays" slogan? Most of us have been led to believe that the reason for these bizarre actions stem from efforts not to offend other religious groups. I don't believe that for a second!
Many years ago I wrote an article for a local newspaper pointing out how ludicrous it is for Canadians to deny the reason for Christmas celebrations. A few days later I was asked to phone a woman who 5 years earlier had immigrated to Canada with her son from India. My first thought was that she was going to scold me for my article but that is not what happened. She started by explaining her background and that she was Hindu. Then she proceeded to inform me that she also was puzzled why Canadians spent so much effort trying to deny the reason for the Christmas season. I asked if I could share her thoughts and she immediately agreed to let me do so.
There may very well be a few very loud religious leaders from other faith groups that voice their disapproval but I believe they are in a huge minority. The politicians and our media are listening to other voices and they are usually the ones who claim to have no religion: they are called atheists. Even there, I believe it is a minority but they are very vocal. I believe it is time to take back Christmas in North America and do away with political correctness. If our atheist friends don't like to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, feel free to work on those days when the rest of us have time with our families. Feel free to go about your normal activities and enjoy your lives. Don't however tell the rest of us what we can and cannot do during this time of year!
Jesus Christ doesn't need my help in promoting his birth. He has survived over 2000 years and if you will permit a bit of theology, he has survived since forever. I heard someone recently make the comment from a church pulpit that Jesus was "flawed". In reality Jesus has been the one and only person to live on this planet that was not flawed. He was sinless and yet took our sins upon Himself. That is why He came to earth in the first place and that is also why so many hate Him just like King Herod did those many years ago. He is still a threat to many who want to be king of their own lives.
Friedrich Nietzsche is seen by many in this camp as a hero of sorts. His teachings were front and centre for the Nazi's in the 1930's and 1940's. He proudly proclaimed that God was dead and that there was no such thing as absolute truth.
So here we are, about to enter into a New Year. There are many out there that want to tell us that there are no absolutes and that there is no God and yet God has survived despite what men have tried to convince themselves of. For the sake of our children and generations to come, please take the time to investigate the God of the universe. The one absolute truth that will never change is that God loves all of mankind, including those who hate Him or deny his existence. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" - John 3:16
