Taking Offense

Did you ever wonder who it is that decides that schoolchildren should not be allowed to sing Christmas carols at school? Who determines that manger scenes can't be erected in public settings? For that matter, who began the ridiculous "Happy Holidays" slogan? Most of us have been led to believe that the reason for these bizarre actions stem from efforts not to offend other religious groups. I don't believe that for a second! Many years ago I wrote an article for a local newspaper pointing out how ludicrous it is for Canadians to deny the reason for Christmas celebrations. A few days later I was asked to phone a woman who 5 years earlier had immigrated to Canada with her son from India. My first thought was that she was going to scold me for my article but that is not what happened. She started by explaining her background and that she was Hindu.
